The present day county courthouse, on Main Street in the historic district in Rogersville, is the oldest courthouse in Tennessee still in use. Rogersville, the county seat, was settled in 1775 by the grandparents of Davy Crockett of Crocketts Creek. There, in the same year, they were massacred by hostile Indians and buried in what is now downtown Rogersville. Rogersville receives its name from founder Joseph Rogers, an Irishman who was given the land as a wedding present by his father-in-law. In addition to the courthouse, the town also has the state's oldest inn and post office. Other incorporated towns in Hawkins County are Church Hill, Mount Carmel, Surgoinsville and Bulls Gap, home of the late country comedian Archie Campbell of "Hee Haw."
