Benton County was formed on December 19, 1835, from parts of Humphreys and Henry counties. Its name honors David Benton, a highly-regarded county citizen of the 1800s.

Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park near the small town of Eva claims West Tennessee's highest elevation -- some 650 feet above sea level -- at Pilot Knob. The Tennessee River and Folklife Museum is located atop "The Knob," where visitors are treated to a splendid view of the river.

Mussel diving is a popular and profitable pastime along the Tennessee River. A museum in the county shares the story of mussel-diving and cultured pearls. Agriculture remains strong in Benton County, and though production has declined in recent years, local farmers are still recognized across the state for their production of sorghum molasses.
